Sexo después de la operación de próstata (prostatectomía)

Sex after prostate surgery (prostatectomy)

Prostate health problems, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (swollen prostate) and prostate cancer, affect hundreds of thousands of men in Spain each year.

If you have been diagnosed with a serious prostate problem, your doctor may suggest a prostatectomy, a surgical procedure in which part or all of the prostate is surgically removed.

Prostate removal surgery is often very effective in treating prostate cancer and inflammation (when the cancer is detected early enough), but can lead to complications.

These include sexual performance problems such as erectile dysfunction and difficulty ejaculating normally.

Although these effects can change your experience with sex, many men can still enjoy a full and satisfying sex life after prostate surgery by making certain lifestyle changes and using medication.

Maintaining Your Sex Life After Prostate Surgery

Although prostate surgery can affect your sexual performance, having prostate surgery does not mean that you cannot have sex or enjoy a satisfying sex life.

You will have to make some changes in how you have sex. This may include the use of erectile dysfunction medications, erectile enhancement devices or start doing penile rehabilitation exercises to keep your penis stimulated and healthy.

If this is your case and you have recently had prostate surgery, it is important to talk to your doctor.

He or she will probably talk to you about the following options:

Oral medications for erectile dysfunction.

It is common and normal to experience some degree of erectile dysfunction after a prostatectomy. In fact, some research shows that 85% of men experience some level of erectile dysfunction after a radical prostatectomy.

Erectile dysfunction caused by prostate surgery can sometimes be permanent. However, for many men it is a temporary problem that improves as your body recovers from the procedure.

After prostatectomy 40% - 50% of men who develop erectile dysfunction return to their normal level of sexual function within a year.

After prostate surgery, erectile dysfunction is usually treated with medications such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and others.

These medications work by improving blood flow to the penis. Using oral ED medications, 75% of men who undergo prostatectomy are able to achieve a successful erection.

Other medications and devices

If the prostatectomy causes damage to the nerves near the penis, or if you take medication for high blood pressure, angina or other health problems, using an oral ED medication may not be the right choice.

In this case, your doctor may recommend another type of medication or a device to help you achieve an erection:

  • Penile injection therapy. This involves using injectable medications to stimulate blood flow and improve erections. These medications are usually administered with a very small needle (5/16 inch long) to minimize discomfort. It may seem unpleasant but it is relatively simple to use and has a 70% - 80% success rate.
  • Vacuum devices or penis pumps. This works by creating a vacuum around the penis, causing blood to enter the penis and allow it to become erect.

Habits and lifestyle changes.

There are lifestyle changes you can make to promote blood flow and improve your erectile health:

  • Change eating habits to maintain healthy nutrition and weight.
  • Exercising regularly to improve cardiovascular health
  • Stop smoking and nicotine products.
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • While these changes alone are unlikely to treat prostatectomy-related erectile dysfunction, they do help increase blood flow, improve overall health and improve sexual function.
